Halong proper = 2,000+ limestone karsts but mass-tourism crowding. Lan Ha Bay (south of Halong, accessed via Cát Bà) = same karst scenery, 1/10 the boats. Bai Tu Long (north of Halong) = quietest. Cát Bà island = stay option + kayaking + national park. Pick duration + group + budget + vibe.
"Halong Bay" is shorthand for four distinct experiences that look similar in photos but feel different in practice. Halong proper is the iconic crowded cruise zone. Lan Ha Bay is the same karst scenery south of Halong, accessed via Cát Bà island. Bai Tu Long is the quietest of the three. Cát Bà island itself is a destination with beaches, a national park, and a real town. Most "Halong Bay tours" sold in Hà Nội are the mass-market version — 30+ boats anchored together overnight, rushed schedules, mid-tier food. Better options exist but require different decisions.
The widget picks based on your duration, group, budget, and crowd tolerance. The right answer for a couple on a $400 budget is different from a family on a $1,500 budget is different from a backpacker with 24 hours.
Four quick selections. Output below.

"Go to" is the area, not a specific operator. Within each area, multiple operators run trips. The widget recommends the area based on your criteria — you then book a specific boat within it. Halong proper, Lan Ha, Bai Tu Long, and Cát Bà island are all distinct destinations with different boat companies.
"Day or overnight" reflects what makes sense at that budget + duration. A 1-night trip at $100–300 has to be in Lan Ha (Halong proper is more expensive). A 2-night trip at $600+ is luxury cruise territory. The widget picks the right combo.
"Vessel type" is the boat category. Day boat: large, shared, 30+ passengers. Overnight boat: smaller, cabin-based, 10–30 passengers. Private junk: charter only, full boat for your group. Kayak: independent or add-on to overnight.
The warning card flags the specific failure mode for your combination. Mass-market trap, day-trip rush, off-season timing — different warnings for different picks.
Honestly, no — for most travelers. The 10+ hour door-to-door experience means 5 hours on the water and a rushed itinerary. The exception: very tight schedule (24h in Hà Nội). Otherwise, spend the night.
Real phenomenon in Halong proper — operators are assigned anchor zones, and 30+ boats end up in the same area overnight. Views from one boat look identical to the next. Serious travelers pick Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long — same scenery, less crowding.
Direct (operator website or email) is 10–20% cheaper but riskier if something goes wrong. Agents are easier and more expensive but you have someone to complain to. For $200–500 trips, direct is fine. For $1,000+ trips, an agent is worth the markup.
October–December (autumn, cool) and March–April (spring, mild). Avoid June–August (typhoon risk, hazy) and Tết (some operators closed). September and February are shoulder seasons with good weather and lower prices.
Halong Decision Tree is a Vietnam Compass standalone tool. It exists because "Halong Bay" is four different experiences, and the wrong pick — usually Halong proper when Lan Ha would have been better — leads to a rushed, crowded experience most travelers regret.
