Vietnam has two beach islands worth a flight — one is a Vinpearl-resort cable-car entertainment complex with a national park interior, the other is a marine national park with a prison history and turtle nesting. They're not substitutes. This page picks the right one for what you actually want from an island.
Most "Vietnam beach" lists recommend Phú Quốc as if it were the only option. The reality: Phú Quốc is a 574 km² island with 200+ hotels, Vinpearl resort complex, the Hòn Thơm cable car (world's longest sea cable car at 7.9 km), a national park interior, and a long-standing debate about whether the cable car damaged Hòn Thơm island's ecology. Côn Đảo is a 76 km² archipelago — marine national park, diving with turtles Jun–Sep, the infamous "tiger cages" prison (now a museum), and far fewer tourists. It also has 2–3 direct flights from HCMC only, no Vinpearl, and a much higher per-trip cost.
The picker works by trip goal: resort beach, diving, nature + hiking, historical site, family-friendly, off-the-beaten-path. It tells you which island matches, what month is best, the access (Phú Quốc has 5–10 daily flights from HCMC and HAN; Côn Đảo has 2–3 from HCMC only) and the cost band.
What's the trip goal? The widget gives you the island, the access route, and the cost band for 5 days.

The one trap
Cable car is a 2-hour round trip — half a beach day.
The recommendation row picks one island. "Resort beach" almost always means Phú Quốc — Vinpearl, JW Marriott, Premier Village and InterContinental all have beachfront properties. Côn Đảo has Six Senses and a handful of mid-range hotels, but the scale is different.
Diving is split. Phú Quốc south has more dive shops and visibility can be 25+ m in dry season, but the best coral is damaged. Côn Đảo's marine park has healthier reef and the famous May–Sep turtle nesting season (green and hawksbill). If diving is the priority, pick Côn Đảo unless you want a longer trip with a diving school.
Nature + hiking. Phú Quốc National Park covers 60% of the island — there's a real jungle interior with marked trails, river crossings, and the abandoned Pepper Farm at Hàm Ninh. Côn Đảo has hiking too but more limited.
History. Côn Đảo is the only pick. The "tiger cages" prison museum and the French-era penitentiary are sobering but important. Phú Quốc's main historical marker is the Coconut Tree prison (used during the Vietnam War) — it's a quick visit, not a destination.
Access. Phú Quốc has direct flights from HCMC (1 hr), Hà Nội (2 hr), Đà Nẵng, and several cities. Côn Đảo has 2–3 daily flights from HCMC only — Vietnamese Airways and Bamboo (formerly VASCO). For Hà Nội-based travellers, Phú Quốc is much easier.
Reading the cost. Phú Quốc ranges from $30 hostels to $400/night resorts. Côn Đảo mid-range is $80–200/night; budget options are limited (a few $20–40 guesthouses). The cost band shown is mid-range for 5 nights including flights.
The cable car (500,000 VND one-way) is the world's longest sea cable car and gets constant hype. Reality: 15-minute ride, a small beach on Hòn Thơm island, Aquatopia water park (extra fee), and back. Half a beach day minimum. Skip if you only have 3 nights.
Most resort recommendations put you on Bãi Trường — it's the longest beach on Phú Quốc and the most developed. Real sand beauty is at Bãi Sao (white sand, calm water, ~30 min south of Dương Đông town).
Côn Đảo's small airport closes unpredictably in bad weather (rain, low cloud). Always have a buffer day in HCMC before any onward connection. Bamboo Airways is more reliable than VASCO historically, though both are subject to weather.
Investor hype has been pushing Côn Đảo as the next big island. It will probably never become a Phú Quốc — the marine park rules, no airport expansion, and the limited accommodation keep development in check. This is what makes it worth going.
It's been controversial since opening — concerns about the cable support pylons through protected coral areas and the volume of visitors to a small island. Sun Group (operator) cites environmental impact assessments, but independent marine biologists have raised concerns. Visit and judge for yourself; the cable car is the only realistic way to reach Hòn Thơm.
Foreign visitors don't need a permit — just a passport for the flight. National park entry fees apply at the gate (~200,000 VND). If you're visiting specific dive sites or remote islands within the archipelago, dive operators handle the marine park paperwork.
Bãi Sao (Star Beach) has the white sand, calm water and is the most photogenic. Bãi Khem and Bãi Gành Dầu are quieter alternatives on the south and west. Avoid Bãi Trường unless your hotel is on it.
Logistically awkward — they're in opposite corners of Vietnam, no direct flights. Most "combine" trips are actually Phú Quốc + Hà Tiên (the mainland border town near Cambodia), which is a different proposition. For both, you need 10+ days and HCMC as the connecting hub.
Phú Quốc vs Côn Đảo is a Vietnam Compass standalone tool. It exists because most "Vietnam beach" guides treat them as interchangeable options — they're not, and the access cost difference alone (Phú Quốc from HCMC at $25–60 vs Côn Đảo from HCMC at $90–160 one-way) means the wrong pick can blow the trip budget.
Limitations. The widget picks by primary trip goal. Real trips often combine goals; the cost band is mid-range 2026 reference. Flight prices fluctuate seasonally.
