A $30 VietJet ticket is not $30 once you've added a bag, a seat, and a credit-card surcharge. A Vietnam Airlines ticket is $70 but covers most of what you'd otherwise pay for. This widget picks the airline that actually wins for your route and passengers — with the baggage reality specific to your destination airport.
Vietnam has four domestic carriers and the price gap between the cheapest and most expensive ticket on the same route can be 3× to 5× — but so can the gap between what each ticket actually includes. VietJet's headline fare has no checked bag, no seat choice, no refund. Vietnam Airlines' fare covers 23 kg checked + seat + flexibility. Bamboo Airways is half the fleet it used to be. Pacific Airlines is the budget newcomer with uncertain schedules. The calculator below gives you the real per-person cost including bags, plus the bag-enforcement reality at your destination airport (DAD, PQC, CXR are stricter than HAN/SGN).
It also covers two non-obvious tactics: separate one-way tickets on two different airlines are often cheaper than a return on one, and exit-row seats on VietJet cost a fraction of what a "Skyboss" upgrade costs on Vietnam Airlines.
Pick airline, route, passengers and bags. We'll show the real per-person cost and the airline's baggage reality.

Cheap routes have more frequent promo fares.
Most promo fares are per person.
Vietnam Airlines: 23 kg free. Others: pay per bag.

VietJet "Skyboss" vs basic fare reality. Basic is $25–50 one-way, no checked bag, no seat choice, no refund, no change. Skyboss is $60–110, 20 kg checked, seat choice, changeable. Most tourists buy basic and then add a 20 kg bag at the airport for ~$15/kg, ending up at $70–110 total. So the "cheap" VietJet ticket isn't cheap if you're bringing a real suitcase.
Vietnam Airlines flexibility premium. The headline fare includes 23 kg checked, seat choice, and 24-hour flexible rebooking. The "Flex" upgrade adds refundability. For independent travellers whose plans might shift, paying 20–30% more for Vietnam Airlines is usually worth it.
Bamboo Airways status. Bamboo entered financial difficulties in 2023 and has been running a reduced schedule through 2024–2026. Some routes are paused, others operate weekly only. Always check the live schedule before relying on a Bamboo connection.
Pacific Airlines basics. Pacific (formerly Jetstar Pacific) was acquired by Vietnam Airlines and re-launched as a budget brand in 2025. Operations are stable but limited — mainly the trunk routes (HN-SGN, HN-DAD, SGN-DAD).
Checked bag weight limits at smaller airports. HAN and SGN are forgiving — 23 kg on the dot, 24 kg with a smile. Đà Nẵng (DAD), Phú Quốc (PQC) and Cam Ranh (CXR) weigh bags more strictly. A 24 kg bag at DAD will cost you ~$8/kg over. Pack light if you're ending at the coast.
The separate-ticket trick. Booking two one-way tickets on different airlines (VietJet outbound, Vietnam Airlines back) is often 20–40% cheaper than a return on one. The catch: if your outbound is delayed and you miss the inbound, you're on your own — separate tickets mean no airline rebooks you.
Exit-row seats on VietJet. VietJet charges ~$15–25 for an exit-row seat at booking. It's the cheapest legroom in Vietnam. Vietnam Airlines' exit row is included in the standard fare.
VietJet's website passes a 2–3% "payment gateway fee" to international cards. Use a Vietnamese bank card (Vietcombank, Techcombank) or pay via bank transfer to skip it.
VietJet's "20 kg combo" sells for $25 at booking but at the airport counter it's $15 per kg for overweight — only buy if you actually need it.
All Vietnamese budget carriers void the ticket if you miss the flight. No credit, no rebook. Arrive 90 minutes before departure.
Bamboo has dropped routes with little notice in 2024–2025. Don't build a multi-leg itinerary around a Bamboo connection without a backup.
Yes — but only on a small number of seats per flight, and only if you book 3–8 weeks ahead. The Tuesday morning "0 đồng" flash sales are real but sell out in 10 minutes. Mid-week off-peak is when the real $30 fares appear.
Only if you have a long layover (3+ hours) and a backup plan. If the first flight is delayed and you miss the second, the second airline treats you as a no-show. For tight connections (under 2 hours), always book through the same carrier or buy a through-ticket.
The bus + ferry option takes 7–8 hours and burns a full day. The flight is $40–90 and 2 hours. For a 3-day Phú Quốc trip, flying pays back. For a longer stay, the bus is half the cost.
Yes. One small bag (56 × 36 × 23 cm, 7 kg) is free on all Vietnamese carriers. VietJet is stricter about the size check than Vietnam Airlines — they will weigh and measure at the gate. Pack a true 7 kg if you're pushing it.
Domestic Flight Decoder is a Vietnam Compass standalone tool. The standard answer to "which airline" is "VietJet, it's cheap" — which is wrong for half the routes if you have luggage. The calculator runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
Limitations. The fare breakdown is an estimate built from 2026 reference data. Real ticket prices fluctuate by route, day, and booking window. Use the calculator as a sanity check, then book on the airline's site or a reputable third party.
Data collection. None. This tool is a single HTML file. The calculator runs entirely in your browser — no inputs are sent to any server, logged, or stored.

Prices change. Fares fluctuate by season, route, and demand. 2026 figures are mid-year references; Tết week can multiply prices 3–5×.
