Vietnam's airports are where tourists lose the most money per minute. A wrong turn at arrivals costs you $20–80. This page gives you the airport-specific exit strategy — official taxi rates, Grab pickup zone locations, the airport bus 86 trick, and the scam-warning level for your arrival hour.
The "exit the airport and take a taxi" advice is incomplete. At Nội Bài (HAN), the airport bus 86 runs to central Hà Nội for 45,000 VND and is faster than a taxi at peak hour. At Tân Sơn Nhất (SGN), the Grab pickup zone is in a different car park and you need to walk. At Phú Quốc (PQC), the official taxi line is the only sensible option — Grab drivers often refuse airport trips. This widget tells you which airport has which scam-warning level, what the right exit is, and roughly what it costs.
Also covered: the "no, the meter is broken" pattern, the "taxi tout with sign" trap, the Vinasun green detection rule, and the hotel pickup premium (some hotels charge for pickup, others include it — worth checking before you book).
Airport + arrival hour + group size + luggage. We'll recommend the exit and estimate the cost.
Each airport has different transport options.
Late-night arrivals get the highest scam pressure.
More than 3 changes the math.
Big luggage pushes you toward a car, not a bus.

The "no, the meter is broken" pattern. A taxi driver at arrivals tells you the meter doesn't work and quotes a flat fare. The fare is usually 2–3× the metered price. Walk past, flag the next car, or open Grab. Most Vinasun/Mai Linh cars have working meters — if one doesn't, the next one will.
"Taxi tout with sign" trap. Men in suits hold printed name signs offering "taxi". They are unlicensed brokers — the ride they sell you is unmarked, unmetered, and uninsured. Always walk to the public taxi stand (Vinasun / Mai Linh) or to the marked Grab pickup zone.
Vinasun green detection. Vinasun taxis are bright green with a V on the door. Mai Linh are also green with an ML. Both are metered and reputable. Other green cars (or any unmarked white/red/blue cars loitering at arrivals) are typically the tout fleet.
The airport bus 86 trick. Bus 86 runs from Nội Bài (HAN) arrivals to central Hà Nội (Long Biên station) for 45,000 VND. Journey time 45–70 minutes depending on traffic. Runs from ~5 am to 10 pm. It's slower than a taxi in low traffic but FASTER at rush hour because it uses the bus lane. Perfect for solo travellers or couples with small luggage.
Grab pickup zone location. The pickup pin on the Grab map at HAN is in Car Park 4 (multi-storey), a 5-minute walk from Terminal 2 arrivals. At SGN it's the domestic terminal ground floor — walk out the exit, look for the Grab sign. Drivers wait at the marked lane; you can only board from there.
Hotel pickup premium. Some hotels (especially mid-range and above) include airport pickup in the room rate. Others charge $10–25 for the service. Check the booking confirmation — and if not included, weigh whether the convenience beats a metered taxi.
Phú Quốc special. PQC's official taxi line is the most reliable option. Grab drivers on the island often refuse airport trips (low fares relative to the queue wait). Book a hotel pickup in advance if your hotel offers one — it's cheaper than the metered taxi line.
Late-night HAN arrivals see the highest density of unmetered cars at Terminal 1. Use the public taxi stand — pay the metered amount + the 10,000 VND airport toll.
International arrivals at SGN are channelled past a long row of drivers waving name signs. Walk past all of them. The Grab pickup is on the ground floor outside the building.
Some drivers at DAD claim "your hotel is far, the regular taxi won't go" and quote $20. The hotel is 15 minutes away. The meter is fine.
Some drivers claim Grab is unavailable on Phú Quốc. It is — open your app. But for the far north beaches (Vinpearl, JW Marriott), a metered taxi to a fixed fare may be cheaper than Grab.
Yes. It's an official Hà Nội city bus with luggage racks and route signage in English. Mostly locals use it; it's clean and predictable. The only downside is the stop — Long Biên — which is a 5–10 minute taxi / Grab ride to most Old Quarter hotels.
At HAN, the airport restricts Grab pickup zones to specific car parks. At SGN, the pickup zone has finite capacity — at peak hour, drivers can circle for 20 minutes before getting a slot. At PQC, drivers sometimes decline airport trips because the queue to enter the airport is 30+ minutes.
HAN: 10,000 VND toll, plus the legal +7 km surcharge (~50,000 VND) on the meter. SGN: 10,000 VND toll. DAD, CXR, PQC: small tolls (5,000–10,000 VND). Anything beyond these is the driver keeping the difference.
If your hotel includes it — yes, it's the lowest-stress option. If it costs $15+ extra, weigh it against a metered taxi ($8–15 in HAN/SGN). For late-night arrivals with children or heavy luggage, the premium is worth it.
Airport Pickup Reality is a Vietnam Compass standalone tool. It exists because the first decision after a 12-hour flight determines whether you save $20 or get scammed for $80, and most guides treat all five airports identically. The recommender runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
Limitations. Costs are 2026 mid-year references; Grab surge is volatile; airport layouts can change. Use this as a starting framework, not a guarantee.
Data collection. None. This tool is a single HTML file. The recommender runs entirely in your browser — no inputs are sent to any server, logged, or stored.
