Three ride options, three different logics. The app always wins on paper — but in Hà Nội alleys, in rain at 7 pm in District 1, with a big suitcase, the answer changes. Pick your situation and we'll tell you which mode actually beats the others on cost and wait time.
"Just use Grab" is the lazy answer. In Hà Nội Old Quarter alleys, a xe ôm (motorbike taxi) cuts through traffic the app car can't, costs half as much, and arrives in 30 seconds. At midnight in District 1 in the rain, a Vinasun or Mai Linh taxi is safer than a surge-priced Grab. At the airport, a Grab pickup is cheaper than the official taxi line but slower because the pickup zone is in a different car park. This widget returns a verdict by city, distance, time of day and weather — and tells you the typical wait.
Also covered: the "Be" app history (Be was merged into Grab in 2023 — there's no separate Be app anymore), the Vinasun vs Mai Linh reputation (both solid, both metered, slight differences), and the airport +7 km surcharge legal amount.
City + distance + time of day + weather. We'll recommend the mode and show cost + wait.
Each city has its own ride-hail dynamics.
Short trips (<2 km) favour xe ôm; long trips favour taxi.
Surge and availability change with the clock.
Rain sends every tourist to Grab — surge multiplies fast.

When xe ôm beats Grab. In Hà Nội Old Quarter alleys, xe ôm cuts through streets a Grab car physically can't enter. In Sài Gòn, GrabBike (the xe ôm option inside the Grab app) is faster than a Grab car for any trip under 4 km. At peak hour, a xe ôm weave is 3× the speed of a car in traffic.
When taxi beats Grab. Rain + night + big luggage = safety over savings. Vinasun (green) and Mai Linh (green) are the two reputable metered companies — both run on VND/km meters, no surge, drivers rarely argue. The 2026 Hanoi/SGN airport pickup surcharge is the legal rate of +7 km on the meter at the flag-fall rate (~50,000 VND) — anything beyond that is the scam pattern.
The "Be" app history. Be was a Vietnamese ride-hail app that competed with Grab in 2018–2023. In 2023 it was merged into Grab — there's no separate Be app to download. Anyone claiming to be a Be driver is either running an illegal taxi or a fake app. Ignore.
Vinasun vs Mai Linh reputation. Both run metered taxis with drivers in uniform. Vinasun (green) has a slight edge for airport runs; Mai Linh (also green) is slightly more common in the city centre. Both have an app for booking — but most tourists just flag them down.
Airport +7 km surcharge. At Nội Bài and Tân Sơn Nhất, the official airport taxi line is supposed to add the cost of the airport exit road to your meter (about 7 km × flag-fall rate = ~50,000 VND). Anything beyond that and the driver is overcharging. Walk to the public taxi stand (Vinasun / Mai Linh), not the tout who grabs you at arrivals.
Street xe ôm vs GrabBike. Street xe ôm drivers sit at corners and bargain — usually 50–70% of the GrabBike app price, but no insurance, no GPS, no recourse if there's a problem. Use for short trips where you know the price; avoid for anything over 5 km or after dark in unfamiliar areas.
A driver claims the meter is broken and quotes a flat fare — usually 2–3× the metered price. Get out and flag the next car. This is the most common taxi scam in Vietnam.
At airports and train stations, men in suits hold name signs offering "taxi". They're unlicensed brokers. Always walk to the public taxi stand or open your Grab app.
Grab car surge hits 2.5× during the Friday-evening rush + rain combo. The same trip at 9 pm is half the price. Wait 90 minutes or take a taxi.
At airports, the Grab pickup zone is in a specific car park — often a 5-minute walk from arrivals. The pin on the map looks correct; the driver can't reach you unless you go to the marked zone.
Off-peak, yes — 15–25% cheaper than a metered Vinasun. At peak hour or in rain, no — surge pricing often makes Grab 50–100% more expensive than the same trip in a metered taxi. The "Grab is cheaper" assumption only holds for off-peak, mid-day rides.
Most GrabBike drivers are professional and the platform tracks every trip. Wear the helmet they hand you (it may be thin, but it covers you legally). Hold the grab handle with both hands. Don't ride if you have back problems — the bike is harder than a scooter seat feels.
Two reasons. First, the airport taxi line adds the legal +7 km surcharge to your meter. Second, Grab pickup zones at airports are usually a long walk from arrivals — many tourists take the official taxi line instead and accept the premium.
Yes. Grab Vietnam accepts cash. The driver may not have change for 500,000đ notes — small denominations only. Card payment is also possible but requires a Vietnamese-issued card on the app, which most tourists don't have.
Grab vs Xe Ôm vs Taxi is a Vietnam Compass standalone tool. It exists because "just use Grab" leaves money on the table in Hà Nội alleys and overpays at the airport in rain. The recommender runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
Limitations. Costs are mid-2026 references; Grab surge is volatile by definition. The verdict is a typical-case answer — your specific corner at your specific hour may differ.
Data collection. None. This tool is a single HTML file. The recommender runs entirely in your browser — no inputs are sent to any server, logged, or stored.

Local variation. This tool reflects typical 2026 conditions. Driver behaviour, app availability, and street xe ôm prices vary by neighbourhood, season, and event.
